CSU Ballet Conservatory - When to begin ballet studies

Swan Rehearsal3 Ballet can be studied at any age. The benefits of a good training program will be apparent to the ballet student right away: more flexibility and muscular strength, more poise in movement and greater body awareness. Our school starts with three year olds and that is a good age to start with one class a week. If one desires to make ballet a career or even to build strength to go on pointe then girls should begin taking two classes a week around the age of 7 or 8 and boys around 10 years of age. It is imperative that the student’s body begin conditioning at an early age to withstand the physical rigors that come from more advanced training. There have been many exceptions to these beginning ages by boys and girls who began training much later and still made professional careers in dance. Those students usually have had some other physical activity before starting ballet. Columbus Ballet’s Nutcracker performance includes children starting at age seven. Enroll now for a chance to be in our next performance of The Nutcracker.

Summer Classes

Summer study is recommended for all dance students. It is a time to work on technique without the pressures of schoolwork. Workshops will be planned for advanced students which will allow them to take class every day and have the addition of guest instructors.
